Assistant News Director

Location: Rochester, New York, United States

Salary: $55,000–$65,000 per year, based on experience

What you will do

• Support the News Director in managing the News and Production Departments and serve as News Director when needed.
• Plan staffing, training, performance evaluations, and employee development.
• Develop coverage strategies for television, RochesterFirst.com, and the RochesterFirst streaming app.
• Lead or support editorial decision-making for multi-platform content operations.
• Critique daily newscasts, correct errors, and provide mentoring feedback to newsroom staff.
• Assign projects, monitor deadlines, respond to coverage questions, and evaluate programming and equipment needs.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Broadcast Journalism or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and work experience.
• Fluency in English and excellent oral and written communication skills.
• At least two years of experience in news programming production.
• Critical thinking, sound content judgment, and strong decision-making skills.
• Ability to meet deadlines, prioritize assignments, manage multiple tasks, and communicate effectively with employees.
• Ability to coach, mentor, and support the development of others.
