Staff Data Engineer

Location: Remote within Canada

Salary: $158,000–$218,000/year in Alberta, British Columbia, and Ontario; $142,600–$200,000/year in other Canadian locations.

What you will do

• Define architecture and engineering standards for Snowflake, dbt, orchestration, streaming, batch ELT, and infrastructure as code.
• Design governed Medallion pipelines and domain-oriented data models for insurance and cybersecurity data.
• Build reusable data products, data contracts, feature stores, semantic models, embeddings, vector search, and RAG foundations.
• Establish observability, data quality, lineage, security, access control, and incident-management practices.
• Partner with engineering, product, underwriting, actuarial, security, and business teams on architecture and business outcomes.
• Influence architecture across teams, mentor engineers, communicate trade-offs, and establish durable standards.

Requirements

• 9–12 years of experience building and operating production data platforms, including ownership of architecture for complex or high-scale systems.
• Deep expertise in Snowflake and dbt, including optimization, incremental processing, cost management, testing, and deployment.
• Strong Python, analytical SQL, and data modeling skills, including dimensional models or Data Vault 2.0.
• Experience with batch and streaming pipelines and tools such as Airflow, Dagster, Prefect, Kafka, Kinesis, Snowpipe Streaming, or Dynamic Tables.
• Experience with data products, data contracts, domain ownership, SLAs, access controls, lineage, quality standards, and AI data systems.
• Production experience with Looker and LookML, plus strong technical leadership and cross-team influence.

Nice to have

• Insurance-domain modeling experience, including underwriting, claims, reinsurance, policy exposure, loss runs, or loss triangles.
• Familiarity with Snowflake Cortex, Feast, DataHub, Atlan, OpenLineage, Elementary, dbt-expectations, or Evidently AI.
• Experience with RBAC, row-level policies, column masking, PII tokenization, audit logging, regulated-data controls, Terraform, or GitHub Actions.
• Experience using AI-assisted development tools such as Cursor or GitHub Copilot.
