State and Local Affairs Lead (AI)

Location: Remote-friendly within the United States; staff are expected to work from an Anthropic office at least 25% of the time, and regular travel across the Western region is required.

Annual salary: $230,000–$265,000 USD

What you will do

• Lead state and local government affairs across multiple Western states, including support for engagement in California.
• Build and maintain relationships with legislators, governors’ offices, attorneys general, state agencies, mayors, city councils, county commissions, and economic development boards.
• Track legislation and regulatory proceedings affecting AI and technology, provide analysis, and represent Anthropic’s policy positions.
• Build partnerships with chambers of commerce, economic development groups, labor organizations, universities, and school districts.
• Represent Anthropic at hearings, regional events, and public forums, including engagements with audiences skeptical of AI.
• Coordinate with policy, communications, legal, and executive teams; manage outside advisors and registered lobbyists.

Requirements

• Experience in state and local government affairs, political strategy, or legislative roles, with demonstrated legislative or regulatory outcomes.
• Existing relationships with state and local leaders in the Western United States.
• Understanding of state legislatures, executive branches, committee processes, legislative and regulatory procedures, and local authority.
• Track record of executing strategic objectives and delivering measurable outcomes.
• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent education, training, and experience in a relevant field.
• Ability to travel regularly across the region and work from a United States location with at least 25% office attendance.

Nice to have

• 8+ years of experience in state and local government affairs, political strategy, or legislative roles.
• Experience with technology policy, emerging technology regulation, coalition building, and external partnerships.
• Experience translating complex technical topics into accessible language and developing policy campaign messaging.
• Ability to manage competing priorities across multiple states and political environments.
