Manufacturing Electrical Equipment Engineer (Automotive Manufacturing): Supporting and improving automated machining and assembly equipment for heavy-duty engine production with an accent on PLC, CNC, HMI, robotics, and industrial control systems. Focus on troubleshooting production equipment, integrating monitoring and data systems, commissioning new machinery, and solving reliability challenges during shared weekend production support.

Location: Detroit, Michigan, United States. Onsite schedule required. Candidates may work in or relocate to Detroit, but relocation assistance is not available.

Salary: $74,000–$94,000 USD per year, depending on knowledge, skills, and experience.

What you will do

  • Troubleshoot and support PLC, CNC, HMI, robotic control systems, servo systems, VFDs, and device-level industrial networks.
  • Maintain uptime and resolve production issues across machining and assembly lines for engine blocks, heads, connecting rods, liners, and turbo components.
  • Improve machining monitoring systems and integrate them with higher-level data systems.
  • Support controls specifications, design reviews, commissioning, and launches of new machining equipment.
  • Provide hands-on technical support while collaborating with maintenance, skilled trades, supervisors, mechanical engineers, and operations teams.
  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives and a shared weekend production support rotation.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, or a related field.
  • At least 6 months of experience or exposure to industrial automation systems, including PLCs, HMIs, robotics, or drive systems; internship, co-op, apprenticeship, military, academic project, or professional experience may qualify.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, technical drawings, and OEM documentation.
  • Ability to occasionally work weekends to support production.
  • Applicants must be legally authorized to work permanently in the United States; visa sponsorship is not available, and existing visa holders are not eligible.
  • Successful completion of a criminal background check and, if required, a pre-employment drug screen.

Nice to have

  • Experience with Siemens Step 7, TIA Portal, 840D, or Allen-Bradley control systems.
  • Familiarity with Fanuc robotics, Cognex vision systems, laser systems, hydraulics, pneumatics, lubrication, or coolant systems.
  • Manufacturing experience in machining, fastening, or assembly operations.
  • Experience with SAP, Maximo, or similar maintenance and asset management tools.
  • Experience using AI tools and technologies to improve productivity, efficiency, or business outcomes.
