Principal Instrumentation & Controls Engineer – Hardware (Nuclear)

What you will do

• Own the I&C hardware architecture and technology roadmap across reactor and nuclear fuel manufacturing facilities.
• Define design philosophies for measurement, redundancy, segregation, hazardous areas, grounding, shielding, calibration, and maintenance.
• Serve as the discipline design authority with final approval over architecture, safety-significant designs, standards deviations, and concessions.
• Lead SIS architecture, redundancy and voting philosophy, SIL verification, and compliance with IEC 61511 and IEC 61508.
• Support safety cases, licensing reviews, audits, HAZOP/LOPA, commissioning readiness, and regulatory engagement.
• Build engineering capability through standards ownership, mentoring, technical hiring, delegation, and development of senior engineers.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in electrical, electronic, mechanical, chemical, systems engineering, or a related discipline.
• 10+ years of instrumentation or I&C engineering experience in process industries.
• End-to-end ownership of instrumentation hardware across major capital projects from concept or front-end design through commissioning, startup, and initial operations.
• Deep hands-on experience with instrument and valve selection, panel and I/O architecture, hazardous area classification, field wiring, grounding, shielding, calibration, and loop commissioning.
• Substantial SIS experience across the IEC 61511 lifecycle, including architecture selection, SIL verification, and formal approval or checking authority.
• Experience directing engineers and representing an engineering discipline to regulators, certification bodies, vendors, or client design authorities.

Nice to have

• Professional Engineer license or ISA CAP/ISA84 certification.
• Nuclear industry experience with 10 CFR 50 Appendix B, NQA-1, nuclear-qualified instrumentation, or nuclear safety cases.
• Experience with high-temperature, high-pressure, corrosive, high-purity, or molten-salt instrumentation qualification.
• Experience with first-of-a-kind plants, standards committees, OT network cybersecurity, or instrumentation tooling platforms.
