TL;DR
Nuclear Operations Engineer (Advanced Nuclear): Developing operational programs, procedures, and readiness capabilities for commissioning, startup, and safe operation of advanced fission facilities with an accent on integrated plant systems, testing, regulatory requirements, and operational readiness. Focus on translating design and safety bases into executable procedures, supporting field commissioning activities, and resolving complex interfaces across engineering, operations, human factors, and safety teams.

Location: Primarily remote, with required travel and temporary onsite assignments. Remote employees must travel to headquarters in Santa Clara, California twice per quarter based on business or team needs, and must work onsite at headquarters for the first two weeks of onboarding. Applicants must meet the definition of a U.S. person under applicable export-control laws.

Salary: $135,000–$185,000 per year

What you will do

  • Develop and maintain operational programs, operating strategies, technical bases, standards, and controlled procedures.
  • Translate design-basis, safety, regulatory, and program requirements into practical operating methods and executable work instructions.
  • Review and validate normal, abnormal, emergency, surveillance, alarm-response, testing, and administrative procedures with procedure writers and engineering subject-matter experts.
  • Support system turnover, construction acceptance, preoperational testing, commissioning, startup, operational-readiness reviews, and plant testing.
  • Provide onsite technical and operational support during commissioning, startup, major testing, outages, and other significant project activities.
  • Work across operations, engineering, regulatory, safety analysis, human factors, maintenance, training, vendors, contractors, and external technical stakeholders.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in nuclear, mechanical, electrical, chemical, or another relevant engineering or technical discipline; equivalent nuclear operational experience may be considered.
  • At least five years of experience in nuclear operations, nuclear engineering, commissioning and startup, power generation, naval nuclear propulsion, national laboratory operations, or another highly regulated technical environment.
  • Experience developing or implementing operational programs, technical procedures, operating procedures, test procedures, or controlled work instructions.
  • Working knowledge of integrated plant systems, including mechanical, electrical, instrumentation and controls, and process systems.
  • Strong technical writing, communication, problem-solving, independent decision-making, and cross-functional collaboration skills.
  • Ability and willingness to travel, complete temporary onsite assignments, and attend the first two weeks of onboarding at the Santa Clara headquarters.

Nice to have

  • Experience as a reactor operator, senior reactor operator, system operator, shift technical advisor, or other nuclear facility operator.
  • NRC Reactor Operator or Senior Reactor Operator licensing, or qualification through the U.S. Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program.
  • Experience with advanced reactors, fast reactors, sodium-cooled systems, liquid-metal systems, microreactors, or first-of-a-kind nuclear facilities.
  • Experience with human factors engineering, control-room design, alarm management, digital control systems, simulators, or operator training.
  • Familiarity with NRC and Department of Energy requirements, nuclear safety, quality assurance, and operational programs.
