Senior Quantum Theorist, Atomic Physics Focus

Location: Berkeley, CA; on-site at the Berkeley office

Base salary: $185,000–$210,000 per year, plus annual bonus and equity.

What you will do

• Lead independent and collaborative theoretical and computational projects for neutral-atom quantum computers.
• Develop and architect atomic physics simulations and translate them into maintainable software.
• Model experimental results, develop quantum hardware noise models, and characterize machine performance.
• Identify research directions, tools, and AI-assisted methods that accelerate theoretical and computational work.
• Collaborate with Quantum Engineering, Quantum Error Correction Theory, and AMO Theory teams.
• Mentor junior AMO theorists and help establish technical best practices.

Requirements

• PhD in physics, mathematics, engineering, computer science, or a related field.
• At least 5 years of post-PhD research or quantum-industry experience.
• Extensive experience with scientific, high-performance, or quantum computing.
• Deep understanding of atomic, molecular, and optical physics; experience with or modeling Rydberg atoms is valued.
• Independent research leadership, a strong publication record, and the ability to communicate complex technical concepts clearly.
• Experience with version control, unit testing, continuous integration, documentation, and high-quality software development in Python, Julia, or C++.

Nice to have

• Experience or strong interest in applying AI tools, LLMs, machine-learning modeling, or optimization methods to research and engineering workflows.
• Public examples of coding quality and project delivery, such as GitHub work.
