TL;DR
Software Engineer (EMB) II (Embedded Systems): Developing and testing embedded software for unmanned aircraft, payloads, sensors, processors, and robotic systems with an accent on C++, Linux application development, real-time troubleshooting, and flight-test integration. Focus on integrating drivers and sensors, supporting prototypes and production transitions, and solving system issues across application, communications, driver, and board-support layers.

Location: Huntsville, Alabama; daily on-site work is required. Periodic travel within the continental U.S. and to approved flight-test locations may be required.

Salary: $74,500–$113,500 per year

What you will do

  • Develop, test, debug, and maintain embedded software for unmanned aircraft, payloads, sensors, processors, and robotic systems.
  • Integrate autopilots, software-defined radios, sensors, communications interfaces, actuators, and other embedded components.
  • Write requirements, test plans, diagnostic tools, and validation procedures while supporting hardware selection and system resource planning.
  • Develop prototypes and proof-of-concept demonstrations, estimate development effort, and support design reviews.
  • Transition software to production and certification environments and participate in multidisciplinary engineering teams.
  • Support flight testing, field-test activities, and handoff to operational teams.

Requirements

  • Must be able and willing to work on-site daily in Huntsville, Alabama.
  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering, or a related field, or equivalent education and experience.
  • Two to five years of relevant experience or demonstrated equivalent competency.
  • Strong C++ and object-oriented development skills, plus Linux application development experience.
  • Experience troubleshooting real-time systems across application, communications, drivers, and board-support layers.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen, U.S. permanent resident, or protected individual with qualifying asylee or refugee status; the role is subject to ITAR/EAR requirements.

Nice to have

  • Experience with C, Python, unit testing, test-driven development, and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Embedded development experience with robotics, drones, vehicles, medical systems, or similar products.
  • Experience with ARM and STM32 processors, microcontroller RTOS platforms, Integrity, or VxWorks.
  • Experience with autopilot software, board bring-up, board support packages, aerospace or defense systems, and electronics test equipment.
  • Experience with formal software requirements, peer reviews, aviation, or remote-control fixed-wing aircraft.
