Director of Payments (Fintech)

Location: Hybrid in San Francisco, California, or remote within the United States. Open to SFO and New York. Candidates residing in Alaska, Delaware, Iowa, Mississippi, Nebraska, South Dakota, West Virginia, or Wisconsin are not being considered. Periodic travel is required.

Salary: $164,900–$236,000 annually, depending on US pay region, location, skills, experience, and market conditions.

What you will do

• Build and prioritize a pipeline of card issuers, networks, processors, wallet platforms, and future transit partners.
• Secure issuer partnership agreements and lead negotiations from initial discussions through contracting and launch.
• Develop partner-specific go-to-market plans covering co-marketing, enrollment, activation incentives, adoption, and usage.
• Align Product, Engineering, Legal, and Marketing on partner requirements, technical dependencies, and launch sequencing.
• Create the Payments commercial operating model, including pipeline reporting, partnership economics, performance targets, and P&L visibility.
• Manage partnerships through launch and scale, resolve adoption or technical friction, and develop the roadmap for transit expansion.

Requirements

• 10+ years of global experience in payments, wallets, fintech, or adjacent ecosystem partnerships.
• Direct experience with card issuers, networks, processors, wallet platforms, or comparable payments partners.
• Experience owning complex partnerships from sourcing and business-case development through negotiation, contracting, launch, and expansion.
• Strong understanding of issuer, processor, and network roles, interchange economics, and relevant regulatory considerations.
• Experience structuring co-marketing funding, activation incentives, exclusivity, tiering, revenue-sharing, or interchange-sharing models.
• Executive-level communication, cross-functional leadership, and experience building a partnership function or playbook in an ambiguous environment.

Nice to have

• Experience launching a new payment, wallet, or tap-to-pay capability from pre-launch through go-to-market and scale.
• Background in wearables, consumer hardware, consumer technology, or digital health.
• Senior-level relationships across issuers, networks, processors, wallets, mobility, or transit organizations.
• International payments experience and familiarity with launching capabilities across multiple markets.
