Science Research Writer - Department of Developmental Neurobiology (Science Communication): Developing written, visual, and multimedia communications that explain the department’s research, publications, and scientific impact with an accent on editorial management, researcher training, and publication support. Focus on editing journal manuscripts and NIH grant applications, presenting scientific data clearly, and coordinating department-level communications with Strategic Communications, Education and Outreach.

Location: Memphis, Tennessee; relocation is required for candidates outside the Memphis area. Relocation assistance is provided.

Salary: $70,720–$126,880 per year.

What you will do

  • Develop a strategic science communication plan with department leadership.
  • Manage editorial projects and coordinate department communications with Strategic Communications, Education and Outreach.
  • Write, edit, and produce articles, marketing materials, videos, infographics, presentations, and institutional publications.
  • Advise and train faculty, staff, fellows, and students on science communication, plain-language writing, presentations, and publication strategies.
  • Review scientific manuscripts, grant applications, and other research documents.
  • Track editorial projects and support seminars, educational programs, and publication activities.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in life sciences or a related field required.
  • At least 2 years of experience as a scientific editor or in relevant research and publication work.
  • Experience with scientific documents, experimental design, statistical principles, scientific data presentation, and publication ethics.
  • Experience with journal articles or grant applications, including NIH applications, is preferred.
  • Regular and predictable attendance is required.

Nice to have

  • PhD or a master’s degree in science communication.
  • At least 5 years of experience in journalism, public information, or a related field.
  • Experience with SharePoint or other website platforms and social media management.
  • Editor in the Life Sciences certification from the Board of Editors in the Life Sciences.
