Science Writer (Earth System Science)

Location: Boulder, Colorado; all work must be performed within the United States, excluding U.S. Territories. Flexible work arrangements may apply; hybrid staff are expected to work on-site approximately 3 days per week.

Hiring range: USD 72,082–90,103 per year.

What you will do

• Build relationships with scientists, leadership, and staff to identify research and projects with strong story potential.
• Translate complex Earth system science into news releases, web content, talking points, brochures, newsletters, and other communications.
• Develop creative science storytelling formats, including video, podcasts, infographics, and other digital media.
• Edit communications materials produced by the Communications Office and other organizational groups.
• Consult with Government Relations, External Engagement, Business Relations, and other groups to tailor messages for specific audiences.
• Help train scientists to communicate effectively through presentations, talking points, and media interactions.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, or a related field, plus six years of writing or editing experience, or an equivalent combination.
• Strong writing, editing, interviewing, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
• Understanding of and enthusiasm for Earth system science, with the ability to explain its societal importance.
• Ability to understand, coordinate, and accurately communicate complex scientific and technical information to multiple audiences and across multiple platforms.
• Ability to identify newsworthy research, manage multiple deadlines, and collaborate with scientists, federal agencies, professional societies, and internal staff.
• Work authorization and location compliance are required for work within the United States; visa sponsorship is not available.

• Experience telling science stories through video, graphics, audio, or other non-traditional formats.
