Staff Software Engineer (DTC)

Location: New York, NY; hybrid work with in-office attendance Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday at the SoHo office.

Salary: $170,000–$182,500 base annually, with final compensation based on location, skills, and experience.

What you will do

• Lead storefront initiatives from technical planning and task breakdown through delivery.
• Own quality, security, testing, maintainability, observability, and production reliability.
• Set technical direction across headless Shopify, subscription, loyalty, experimentation, and integration domains.
• Debug Remix applications, edge infrastructure, and third-party platform integrations across the stack.
• Create shared components, frameworks, exemplars, runbooks, and technical documentation.
• Build consensus with engineering and cross-functional partners while coaching less experienced engineers.

Requirements

• Substantial experience building and operating production e-commerce applications in live, revenue-generating environments.
• Deep hands-on experience with headless Shopify, Storefront API, React Router, Remix data loading and routing, caching, and Shopify Hydrogen.
• Strong JavaScript, TypeScript, modern React, and front-end performance knowledge, including Core Web Vitals and rendering strategy.
• Experience integrating SaaS platforms through APIs and webhooks, including idempotency, retries, rate limits, reconciliation, and graceful degradation.
• Fluency in testing, code review, observability, incident response, and safe production releases.
• Ability to communicate technical decisions clearly, align stakeholders, and commit to team decisions.

Nice to have

• Experience building custom Shopify apps, Shopify GraphQL APIs, OAuth, webhooks, app extensions, Shopify Functions, or checkout extensibility.
• Experience with Recharge, LoyaltyLion, Cloudflare Workers, Google Tag Manager, Optimizely, or comparable platforms.
• Experience in DTC or subscription businesses and with AI tooling in day-to-day engineering work.
