TL;DR
Data Science Intern (Python/Statistics): Developing analyses, experiments, data-processing workflows, simulations, and prototypes using product, telemetry, sensor, application, and operational data with an accent on data quality, statistical methods, and practical engineering constraints. Focus on analyzing noisy and high-volume data, designing experiments, evaluating trade-offs in performance and fidelity, and building reproducible solutions with Python and related tools.
Location: Champaign, Illinois, United States; hybrid workplace with at least 8 hours in person at the BI Design Lab each week during fall and spring, and 40 hours in person during summer. Applicants must be authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship.
Pay: $18.00–$26.00 per hour.
Company
is a global marine industry company developing next-generation technologies and connected products for marine recreation.
What you will do
- Contribute to data science, analytics, research, and engineering projects across product and business functions.
- Translate open-ended questions into measurable objectives, hypotheses, experiments, and implementation plans.
- Collect, clean, join, validate, and explore structured, unstructured, time-series, telemetry, usage, sensor, and operational data.
- Build reusable Python scripts, data-processing workflows, simulations, and prototypes.
- Design experiments to evaluate accuracy, data fidelity, performance, cost, storage, bandwidth, latency, and maintainability trade-offs.
- Document and communicate datasets, code, assumptions, results, limitations, and recommendations with product, software, engineering, operations, and business teams.
Requirements
- Must be authorized to work in the United States immediately without current or future visa sponsorship.
- Currently enrolled in a bachelor's or master's program at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in Data Science, Computer Science, Statistics, Engineering, Applied Mathematics, or a related field.
- Demonstrated experience using Python for data analysis, experimentation, or prototyping, including Polars and NumPy.
- Knowledge of statistics, experimental design, exploratory data analysis, data visualization, and data-quality evaluation.
- Ability to write clear, modular, and testable code and analyze noisy, incomplete, or high-volume real-world data.
- Strong problem-solving, learning, written communication, and verbal communication skills.
Nice to have
- Experience with time-series, sensor, telemetry, streaming, or other high-volume data.
- Familiarity with sampling, signal processing, anomaly detection, compression, feature extraction, or edge computing.
- Experience with Python and SQL data-processing pipelines, cloud environments such as Azure, AWS, or GCP, or software engineering practices.
- Exposure to IoT systems, data acquisition, connectivity flows, embedded systems, or resource-constrained devices.
Culture & Benefits
- Hands-on internship experience in a professional setting alongside experienced professionals.
- Supportive and collaborative project environment with opportunities to apply academic knowledge to real-world work.
- Interns manage schedules, set goals, and receive feedback and performance reviews.
- Part-time hours are capped at 20 per week during fall and spring terms; summer work is full-time in person.
