R&D PhD Summer Intern: Process Development (Surface Engineering)

Location: Boston, United States; five days per week onsite

What you will do

• Support the development, operation, and troubleshooting of advanced coating processes and related equipment.
• Operate and maintain laboratory-scale vacuum-processing equipment according to procedures and safety requirements.
• Plan and execute experiments to improve process quality, consistency, and product performance.
• Analyze operating parameters, material properties, equipment data, and product performance relationships.
• Apply analytical and testing methods to evaluate material characteristics, integrity, durability, and performance.
• Document results and communicate findings and recommendations to cross-functional partners.

Requirements

• Education: PhD in progress in Materials Science, Physics, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
• Hands-on experience operating, maintaining, or troubleshooting laboratory-scale vacuum-processing or materials-processing equipment.
• Experience analyzing data from material characterization and performance-testing methods.
• Experience applying Design of Experiments methodologies to evaluate process variables.
• Strong written and verbal technical communication skills, including presenting complex scientific data clearly.
• Availability for a 12-week internship from May or early June through August 2027, onsite in Boston five days per week.

Nice to have

• Hands-on experience with advanced vacuum-based coating or surface-engineering processes.
• Understanding of material integrity, durability, and process–property relationships in engineered coatings or related materials.
• Familiarity with diagnostic methods for vacuum- or plasma-based processes.
