TL;DR
Principal Data Engineer (Genomics): Building secure, resilient and scalable data platforms, pipelines and data products for sensitive clinical, genomic and research data at national scale with an accent on architectural leadership, interoperability and responsible data use. Focus on designing lakehouse, distributed and event-driven systems, embedding privacy and regulatory requirements, and strengthening DataOps, DevOps, CI/CD, automation and platform resilience.
Location: Hybrid role based in the United Kingdom, with office attendance expected at least twice per month. Offices are located in London, Cambridge and Leeds.
Salary: £103,500 per year

What you will do
- Provide principal-level technical leadership across data engineering strategy, roadmaps, standards and technology choices.
- Design and deliver secure, scalable and resilient data platforms, pipelines and data products across cloud and hybrid environments.
- Provide architectural guidance for lakehouse, distributed and event-driven systems.
- Promote interoperability, open standards, data modelling, metadata and provenance across clinical and research platforms.
- Embed privacy, security and regulatory requirements into systems handling sensitive genomic and health data.
- Mentor engineers, share knowledge and strengthen DataOps, DevOps, CI/CD, automation, infrastructure as code, observability and security practices.
Requirements
- Substantial principal-level data engineering experience and a track record of shaping technical direction across multiple teams.
- Experience designing and delivering enterprise-scale data platforms from initial design through production.
- Deep knowledge of modern data engineering, cloud infrastructure, scalable storage and processing, and hands-on programming.
- Strong knowledge of data modelling, metadata, provenance, governance and interoperability.
- Experience building secure and resilient systems for sensitive or highly governed data, preferably in healthcare, genomics, research or another regulated environment.
- Master’s degree or equivalent experience with a specialism in data or infrastructure.
Nice to have
- Experience with genomic, bioinformatics or clinical data platforms and VCF, BAM or FASTQ formats.
- Knowledge of GA4GH, OMOP or FHIR standards.
- Experience with Airflow, Prefect or AWS Glue.
- Experience with lakehouse, data mesh, batch, streaming, distributed or event-driven architectures.
- Additional programming experience with Scala, Java or Shell/Bash.
