Software Architect (Java)

Location: Reston, Virginia, United States; on-site. Occasional project travel of approximately 10% may be required.

Salary: $148,300–$266,900 per year.

What you will do

• Own the end-to-end software architecture of a globally distributed, mission-critical microservices platform.
• Define architecture across service boundaries, data flows, event patterns, deployment topologies, observability, fault tolerance, and recovery.
• Lead the evolution of a Linux-based Java microservices ecosystem and integration architecture for government, commercial, and customer-specific systems.
• Architect deployment patterns for constrained edge environments and centralized or cloud-heavy environments.
• Oversee peripheral and device services, ensuring deployments remain observable, supportable, and maintainable.

Requirements

• Active Top Secret SCI security clearance is required.
• Bachelor’s degree in a technical field, or four additional years of experience in lieu of a degree.
• 15+ years of software engineering experience, including architecture leadership for distributed or mission-critical systems.
• 5+ years of experience architecting production microservices platforms.
• Hands-on expertise with Java JDK 21+, Linux, RHEL or Rocky Linux, and distributed systems.
• Strong experience with MongoDB, Elasticsearch/Logstash, RabbitMQ, and service discovery, orchestration, or secrets tooling such as Consul, Nomad, Vault, or Kubernetes.

Nice to have

• Experience with Vue.js 3 and modern frontend architecture for administrative or operational interfaces.
• Experience designing hybrid-cloud and edge deployment patterns.
• Experience integrating standards-based government, identity, travel, or partner ecosystems.
• Experience with zero- or low-downtime upgrades, event replay, or offline-sync patterns.
• Experience supporting platforms integrated with scanners, readers, imaging devices, kiosks, or other edge hardware.
