Staff Software Engineer, Full Stack (Search)

Location: Remote; must reside in California for consideration

Salary: $200,000–$240,000 base pay annually, depending on location, skills, and experience

What you will do

• Own AWS OpenSearch architecture, including index design, mappings, analyzers, cluster sizing, performance, costs, and upgrades.
• Design search APIs and expand search across drugs, medical practices, labs, imaging centers, and future content types.
• Improve relevance through query understanding, synonyms, typo tolerance, geo-aware ranking, quality and cost signals, and hybrid lexical/vector retrieval.
• Own batch and streaming data pipelines, moving toward near-real-time indexing while maintaining data freshness, correctness, and observability.
• Define search quality metrics, build relevance tooling and analytics dashboards, and lead experiments to improve results.
• Set technical direction, write design documents and RFCs, mentor engineers, communicate with stakeholders, and lead search incident response.

Requirements

• Must reside in California to be considered for this remote role.
• 8+ years of software engineering experience.
• Significant experience owning search systems in production.
• Deep knowledge of Elasticsearch or OpenSearch and experience tuning relevance in production.
• Ability to work across search infrastructure, data pipelines, APIs, analytics, and the member-facing product experience.

Nice to have

• React and Next.js experience.
• Experience with OpenSearch Dashboards, search observability, or custom relevance tooling.
• Healthcare data experience, such as provider directories, NPI, drug or formulary data, or fee schedules.
• Experience moving search from batch indexing to near-real-time indexing.
