Director of Engineering (Ecommerce/AI)

Location: Cranford, New Jersey, United States

Annual salary: $215,000–$230,000 plus annual bonus

What you will do

• Lead, hire, develop, and support a high-performing engineering organization.
• Set architecture direction and technical standards across the Shopify and NetSuite commerce ecosystem, internal tools, and data and AI platforms.
• Improve developer velocity through better tooling, documentation, planning, and shared technical ownership.
• Own engineering roadmaps, sequencing, stakeholder alignment, and build-versus-buy-versus-configure decisions with technical vendors.
• Raise production quality through architecture reviews, incident reviews, release discipline, monitoring, alerting, regression prevention, and reliability practices.
• Shape AI adoption in engineering and products while maintaining reliable analytics, experimentation, instrumentation, and attribution infrastructure.

Requirements

• 10+ years of software engineering experience and 6+ years of engineering management experience.
• Proven experience building and growing engineering teams, developing senior engineers, managing performance, and hiring effectively.
• Strong technical judgment across complex commerce and operations systems, including scalability, reliability, cost, and risk tradeoffs.
• Experience with developer experience, engineering productivity, architecture, roadmapping, and cross-functional stakeholder management.
• Ability to work hands-on while setting long-term technical direction and creating clarity in ambiguous environments.
• Familiarity with frontier AI models, their limitations, and practical applications in engineering and products.
