TL;DR
Automation Engineer (Additive Manufacturing): Designing, commissioning, and sustaining automated additive manufacturing cells for autonomous factories with an accent on robotics, machine safety, powder handling, and production reliability. Focus on integrating industrial equipment, validating FAT/SAT performance, eliminating throughput bottlenecks, and standardizing automation for redeployment across factories.

Location: On-site in Torrance, California, with the posting also listing Los Angeles, CA; travel up to 25% to deployment sites, integrators, and OEM facilities.

Salary: $135K–$220K annually, plus equity.

What you will do

  • Design, deploy, commission, and integrate automation for additive manufacturing cell workflows, including powder handling, build-unit exchange, depowdering, part removal, and downstream logistics.
  • Own cell safety architecture, including risk assessment, guarding, presence sensing, emergency stops, interlocks, and validation for aerospace and defense production.
  • Define mechanical, electrical, and data interface requirements and coordinate machine controls and data integration in OPUS.
  • Execute Factory Acceptance Testing and Site Acceptance Testing against cycle time, throughput, and reliability criteria.
  • Own preventive maintenance, spares strategy, root cause analysis, bottleneck elimination, and machine utilization improvements.
  • Document and standardize automation solutions for redeployment across additional factories.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Robotics, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related field.
  • At least 4 years of experience designing, deploying, and sustaining automation in production manufacturing environments.
  • Hands-on experience with industrial robotics, material handling, machine tending, and PLC-level cell integration.
  • Competency in machine safety, including ISO 12100, ISO 13849 or equivalent, safety interlocks, and validation.
  • Experience commissioning automation equipment and performing structured acceptance testing against performance criteria.
  • Must work on site full time in Torrance, California, travel up to 25%, and be a U.S. person or otherwise eligible for the required ITAR authorizations.

Nice to have

  • Experience with metal additive manufacturing, powder metallurgy, combustible dust, inert atmospheres, or NFPA 484.
  • Aerospace or defense production experience with safety-critical automation.
  • Experience with collaborative robotics and human-robot interaction safety standards.
  • Experience deploying the same automation solution at multiple factories.
