SAU Data Scientist (Fisheries)

Salary: $6,631.67–$9,533.25 CAD monthly

hirify.global hosts the Sea Around Us research initiative, which maintains a global searchable database and online atlas of reconstructed marine capture fisheries catches.

What you will do

• Develop, implement, and maintain statistical and machine learning models for fisheries catch analysis.
• Modernize data-processing workflows and build data visualization tools and interfaces for the Sea Around Us database and website.
• Extract, clean, validate, and integrate large datasets, including subsistence, gender-disaggregated, Indigenous, and small-scale fisheries data.
• Build end-to-end data science capabilities covering feature engineering, validation, deployment, and monitoring.
• Create validation workflows, analytical protocols, documentation, technical reports, and training materials.
• Coordinate research projects, timelines, milestones, stakeholder communication, and technical guidance for database teams, students, and collaborators.

Requirements

• Postgraduate degree in Statistics.
• At least two years of related research analysis experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Proficiency in Python, R, SQL, and Microsoft Excel for working with datasets exceeding one billion rows.
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and collaborate with researchers, software engineers, students, and external partners.
• Strong analytical judgment, communication, documentation, data integrity, and project coordination skills.
• Commitment to respecting diverse perspectives and developing knowledge related to equity, diversity, and inclusion.

Nice to have

• Experience with large biological databases, particularly fisheries data.
• Experience with Pandas, scikit-learn, PyTorch, and AWS services including S3, EC2, and RDS.
• Experience writing clean, modular, and well-documented data science code.
• High initiative, curiosity, flexibility, and willingness to experiment and innovate.
