Staff Software Engineer, Gusto Solo (AI)

Location: San Francisco, CA — hybrid; office attendance approximately 2–3 days per week is expected. A two-day trip to a hirify.global office is required for onboarding. The San Francisco office expectations cover the San Francisco and San Jose metro areas.

Salary: $197,000–$247,000 annual cash compensation for San Francisco, plus stock equity.

What you will do

• Own end-to-end delivery of new product areas, from technical design through production release.
• Build AI-native product experiences and use AI tools to increase engineering effectiveness, including MCP tools.
• Develop and maintain full-stack features across backend APIs and frontend interfaces.
• Make architecture and data-modeling decisions for greenfield problems with limited precedent.
• Partner with Product, Design, Data Science, and GTM to identify problems, prototype solutions, and iterate quickly.
• Help establish engineering practices and technical foundations for an early-stage team build-out.

Requirements

• 8+ years of professional software engineering experience.
• Track record of shipping full-stack features end to end and owning 0→1 or greenfield projects.
• Proficiency with full-stack technologies such as Ruby on Rails, React, TypeScript, and GraphQL.
• Ability to set direction in ambiguous environments and make pragmatic technical decisions.
• Habitual use of AI tools in day-to-day engineering work.
• Excellent written and verbal communication with strong cross-functional collaboration experience.

Nice to have

• Experience building products for self-employed businesses or small and medium-sized businesses.
• Experience in fintech, payroll, tax, accounting, or another regulated or compliance-adjacent domain.
• Experience shipping AI-powered or AI-augmented products, including agents, copilots, or LLM-based tools.
• Startup or “team of one” experience with high autonomy.
