Principal AI Research Scientist (HPE Labs)

Location: Hybrid, with an average requirement of 2 days per week in an HPE office in the United States

Salary: USD 152,000–349,000 annual base salary, with ranges varying by state and geographic location. Variable incentives may also be offered.

What you will do

• Lead research projects from problem formulation and mathematical development through implementation, experimentation, analysis, and publication.
• Translate early-stage ideas into hypotheses and design rapid experiments to evaluate research directions.
• Develop original research for leading venues such as NeurIPS, ICML, and ICLR.
• Collaborate with researchers, engineers, interns, and external partners across AI, physics, quantum computing, and advanced computing systems.
• Develop reusable research assets, including open-source software, models, experimental infrastructure, benchmarks, and datasets.
• Mentor junior researchers and communicate complex technical findings through presentations and scientific papers.

Requirements

• PhD in computer science, artificial intelligence, machine learning, physics, mathematics, or a related field.
• Typically 5+ years of experience after PhD graduate studies, or equivalent experience.
• Strong record of original AI or machine-learning research and publications at leading peer-reviewed venues.
• Deep understanding of machine-learning objectives, assumptions, optimization, learning dynamics, and limitations.
• Advanced proficiency in Python and PyTorch, including research codebases, open-source libraries, HPC, distributed systems, testing, debugging, profiling, and reproducible experimentation.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, autonomy, and interdisciplinary collaboration ability.

Nice to have

• Research background in theoretical, statistical, quantum, or condensed-matter physics.
• Experience combining machine learning with physics, applied mathematics, dynamical systems, optimization, or scientific computing.
• Working proficiency in C++ and experience releasing open-source research software, models, benchmarks, datasets, or evaluation frameworks.
• Familiarity with neural quantum states, quantum many-body systems, quantum simulation, scientific machine learning, Monte Carlo, density functional theory, or molecular dynamics.
