Director / Senior Director, Lab-in-the-Loop (AI)

Location: San Francisco Bay Area, CA; San Diego, CA

Salary: Director — $261,500–$340,200 depending on location; Senior Director — $305,800–$445,800 depending on location.

What you will do

• Lead closed-loop experimental systems that generate data for training and validating large-scale biological foundation and hybrid models.
• Direct experimental verification of model outputs, including target hypotheses and in silico perturbation predictions.
• Partner with machine learning leads to make model outputs experimentally testable and feed results back into model improvement.
• Design ML-first experiments across in vitro and in vivo systems to reduce uncertainty and improve model identifiability.
• Build new model systems, define standards for experimental design and metadata capture, and guide laboratory automation.
• Make build-versus-buy decisions, manage CRO and vendor relationships, plan experimental budgets, and lead matrixed cross-functional teams.

Requirements

• PhD in machine learning, computer science, computational biology, bioinformatics, or a related quantitative field.
• Director level: typically 10+ years of experience and 4–5+ years in people management; Senior Director level: typically 14+ years and 7–8+ years of people or team leadership.
• Deep hands-on experience designing large-scale perturbation or functional genomics experiments for computational modeling.
• Working fluency in machine learning concepts relevant to biological data and the ability to collaborate technically with ML leads.
• Experience building and scaling experimental-computational feedback loops, leading technical teams, and influencing in matrix organizations.
• Experience with build-versus-buy decisions, CROs, external vendors, and experimental design for in vitro and in vivo systems.

Nice to have

• Experience with robotics and automation in wet-lab environments.
• Experience driving multiple multidisciplinary programs in a biotech or AI-driven life sciences environment.
