Director, Environmental Health and Safety

Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service provides emergency response training, workforce training, technical assistance, and programs in fire and rescue, infrastructure and safety, law enforcement, cybersecurity, economic and workforce development, and homeland security.

What you will do

• Lead the agency-wide Environmental Health and Safety department, including managers, professional staff, budgets, contracts, resources, goals, and performance expectations.
• Oversee safety officer, emergency medical, occupational health, fire and life safety, high-risk training, AED, incident investigation, and corrective action programs.
• Direct environmental compliance programs covering hazardous materials, waste, fuels, storage tanks, emissions, stormwater, wastewater, permits, inspections, and regulatory reporting.
• Lead emergency management and business continuity planning, emergency notifications, preparedness exercises, Emergency Operations Center activities, and recovery planning.
• Advise agency leadership on safety, environmental, medical, emergency management, and operational risks.
• Represent the agency with Texas A&M University System offices, regulatory agencies, emergency-response organizations, and external partners.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in an applicable field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• At least 10 years of related Environmental Health and Safety experience, including two years of supervisory experience.
• Equivalent options include 12 years of related experience with an associate degree or 14 years with a high school diploma/GED; all experience must include two years of supervision.
• Valid motor vehicle operator’s license or ability to obtain one within 30 days of employment.
• Ability to work outdoors, travel independently to other or remote locations, work outside normal hours or weekends when required, and handle safety equipment or materials up to 50 pounds with assistance.
• Knowledge of OSHA, TCEQ, DSHS, and Texas A&M University System EHS requirements, with strong regulatory, project management, communication, and leadership skills.

Nice to have

• Master’s degree from an accredited college or university.
• Experience managing multiple EHS programs and professional managers.
• Experience with high-risk training, emergency response, firefighting operations, environmental compliance, or public-sector operations.
• Certification such as Certified Safety Professional, Certified Industrial Hygienist, Certified Hazardous Materials Manager, or Certified Safety and Health Official.
• Experience working with regulatory agencies and executive leadership.
