Senior Director of Engineering, Generative AI

Location: San Mateo, California, United States; office presence is required Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, with optional presence on Monday and Friday.

Salary: $525,510–$573,690 USD base pay annually, plus eligible equity compensation and benefits.

What you will do

• Lead the Applied AI organization within Roblox Build and own the applied AI stack for generative creation.
• Design model strategy and routing based on quality, capability, latency, cost, and safety.
• Lead model adaptation, including fine-tuning, distillation, synthetic data generation, human feedback pipelines, and preference optimization.
• Advance CodeGen systems that understand creator intent, work across multi-file experiences, execute tools, and modify existing games.
• Build LayoutGen capabilities for object selection, spatial reasoning, 3D placement, aesthetic quality, and iterative scene editing.
• Own evaluation frameworks, benchmarks, quality metrics, experiment infrastructure, and human evaluation pipelines.

Requirements

• 10+ years of experience in machine learning and AI.
• 5+ years in senior technical leadership roles overseeing applied AI or ML engineering organizations that shipped generative AI systems at scale.
• Deep experience with areas such as LLM post-training, RLHF, DPO, distillation, model routing, model adaptation, agentic systems, code generation, or evaluation science.
• Experience leading organizations that include AI research scientists and production engineers, including hiring and talent development.
• Strong experience building evaluation frameworks, benchmarks, production-oriented metrics, and continuous experiment infrastructure.
• For US-based roles, candidates must have US work authorization; future H-1B sponsorship may not be supported.
