TL;DR
2027 Summer Intern, Disaster Management (Emergency Management/Disaster Recovery): Rotating across preparedness and insurance, emergency and disaster operations, and disaster recovery service lines with an accent on emergency planning, response coordination, and FEMA program delivery. Focus on developing exposure to hazard assessments, exercise design, incident management, situational reporting, damage assessment, cost recovery, and grant compliance.

Location: Hybrid work from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, or Tallahassee, Florida, or remote work from any U.S. location. The 10-week summer internship runs from early June through early August. Relocation and housing assistance are not provided.

Salary: $31,272–$53,162 annualized pay range based on full-time employment.

What you will do

  • Rotate through preparedness and insurance, emergency and disaster operations, and disaster recovery service lines.
  • Gain exposure to emergency operations plan development, hazard and vulnerability assessments, and disaster exercise design.
  • Support exposure to long-term recovery planning, catastrophe modeling, risk pooling, and resilience strategies.
  • Learn about Emergency Operations Center staffing, Incident Command System practices, National Incident Management System practices, resource typing, and mutual aid requests.
  • Contribute to situational awareness products such as situation reports and leadership briefings.
  • Gain exposure to FEMA Public Assistance delivery, damage assessment, documentation, cost recovery, and grant compliance.

Requirements

  • At least 30 completed college credit hours by the start date in emergency management, homeland security, public administration, political science, public health, or a related field.
  • U.S. citizenship is required due to federal contract requirements.
  • Comfort with Excel, PowerPoint, and Word.
  • Strong writing and research skills, including the ability to translate technical material for different audiences.
  • Genuine interest in emergency management, disaster recovery, or public sector consulting.

Nice to have

  • Familiarity with the disaster lifecycle and core emergency management concepts.
  • Coursework or self-study in FEMA's Incident Command System or National Incident Management System, such as IS-100 or IS-700.
  • Exposure to GIS or other data analysis tools.
