Head of Design Management (Power Transmission & Distribution)

What you will do

• Lead, manage, recruit, mentor, and develop the Design Management team across UK offices.
• Plan workloads, forecast capacity, allocate resources, and maintain project coverage.
• Provide design management and technical governance from concept through closeout across FEED, permitting, planning, engineering, constructability, and construction support.
• Act as the senior escalation point for complex, high-risk, and strategic projects.
• Oversee SHEQ, Safety by Design, CDM 2015 Principal Designer obligations, sustainability, whole-life asset optimization, and carbon reduction.
• Manage technical, commercial, contractual, client, and stakeholder matters, including business development and NEC contract administration.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in a relevant engineering discipline.
• 10+ years of engineering design and design management experience in the UK power transmission and distribution industry.
• Proven experience in line management, leadership, resource planning, and capability development.
• Chartered Engineer status with IET, ICE, or an equivalent institution, or APM Registered Project Professional status.
• Extensive transmission and distribution project experience, including familiarity with National Grid and SSE procedures and policies.
• Strong knowledge of CDM Regulations 2015, NEC3/NEC4 contracts, communication, negotiation, and stakeholder management.

Nice to have

• Master’s degree in engineering or project management.
• CMI or ILM Level 5/7 leadership or management qualification.
• Experience with PAS 2080 and sustainable design standards.
• Health and safety qualification such as NEBOSH, IOSH, or an NVQ in health and safety.
