Principal Data Scientist I (AI/NLP & Generative AI)

Location: London Wall, United Kingdom; the role may also be performed in Amsterdam, Netherlands.

Salary: €86,900–€144,600 annual base pay when performed in Amsterdam.

What you will do

• Set technical direction and architectural standards for AI/ML, NLP, generative AI, LLM workflows, RAG, retrieval, ranking, and recommendation systems.
• Guide the integration of scientific metadata, ontologies, taxonomies, and knowledge assets into reusable AI workflows.
• Review code, architecture, and technical decisions, ensuring production readiness and addressing high-priority technical risks.
• Define evaluation, monitoring, quality, reliability, and responsible AI governance frameworks across data science teams.
• Mentor data scientists, harmonize tooling and delivery practices, and represent data science in senior management and governance forums.
• Translate complex business priorities and ambiguous challenges into practical technical direction.

Requirements

• Significant data science, AI, machine learning, NLP, information retrieval, or related experience at senior or principal level.
• Hands-on experience building AI/ML, NLP, generative AI, and retrieval-based systems, including LLM fine-tuning, prompt engineering, and grounding strategies.
• Experience defining technical standards, evaluation frameworks, or governance processes across multiple teams.
• Working knowledge of AI governance, model risk, compliance, and responsible AI practices.
• Strong Python skills, machine learning fundamentals, and experience with large-scale text or content-rich datasets and modern AI/ML frameworks.
• Experience with RAG, semantic, vector, or hybrid search, experimentation, cloud platforms, software engineering practices, stakeholder management, mentoring, and cross-team leadership.
