Staff Applied AI Engineer (AI)

Location: San Francisco, CA; Washington, D.C.; New York City, NY; or Remote (USA)

Salary: $200,000–$270,000 per year plus bonus and benefits

What you will do

• Build, evolve, and operate the Capabilities Engine as a core platform for reliable agentic product behavior.
• Design reusable abstractions that let agents discover, invoke, compose, observe, and improve capabilities.
• Integrate the engine with phone, email, chat, web login, ODC, and autonomous workflow systems.
• Create evaluation loops using offline tests, production metrics, traces, regression suites, and qualitative review.
• Debug failures across model behavior, tool execution, orchestration, product constraints, and downstream systems.
• Mentor engineers, document system behavior and contracts, and collaborate with product, design, data, platform, and operations partners.

Requirements

• Production software engineering experience with strong engineering fundamentals.
• Practical experience with LLM applications, agentic systems, tool calling, retrieval, workflow orchestration, or applied AI products.
• Ability to design platform abstractions and shared services for multiple teams or product surfaces.
• Strong judgment around reliability, trust, permissions, observability, evaluation, and recovery.
• Ability to debug complex production behavior and collaborate across engineering, product, design, data, operations, and platform.
• Must be located in the United States or work remotely from the USA.

Nice to have

• Experience with TypeScript, Node, GraphQL, Postgres, LLM applications, agentic systems, and workflow orchestration.
• Experience building capability platforms, shared services, orchestration systems, or reusable product infrastructure.
• Experience with evaluation, observability, alerting, tracing, incident response, and operational quality systems.
• Experience building products where customer trust, explainability, permissions, and recovery paths are central.
