Software Engineer II, Backend (Identity Decisioning)

Location: Remote within the United States. Most work is remote within the country of employment; occasional in-person office work and an in-person onboarding experience may be required.

Base pay: $165,000–$225,000 USD annually in CA, WA, NY, NJ, and CT; $146,000–$206,000 USD annually in other U.S. states.

What you will do

• Build backend systems that validate consumer identity across Affirm products and support KYC regulatory requirements.
• Break larger projects into deliverable phases and collaborate with engineering, product, design, analytics, compliance, fraud, and authentication stakeholders.
• Participate in ideation, communicate technical constraints, and evaluate product risks and trade-offs.
• Create and monitor operational metrics, escalate issues, and support on-call and production reliability efforts.
• Contribute to engineering growth through mentoring, feedback, code reviews, and participation in interviews.

Requirements

• 1.5+ years of software engineering experience or equivalent practical experience.
• Experience designing, developing, and launching backend systems.
• Proficiency in Python or Kotlin.
• Familiarity with distributed systems, AWS, MySQL, and Kubernetes.
• Ability to design solutions spanning multiple software components and write clear, tested, extensible code.
• A related Bachelor’s degree or equivalent practical experience, plus strong written and verbal communication skills.
