Director, Legal Commodities (Commodities Trading)

Location: New York, NY; the role is based at 300 Madison Ave, Floor 6. Candidates must be legally eligible to work at the specified location and hold a valid work or study permit where applicable.

Salary: $175,000–$205,000 annually for the New York market, based on experience, qualifications, and location. Incentive compensation may also apply.

What you will do

• Provide day-to-day legal coverage for physical and financial commodities trading across energy, metals, power, and environmental products.
• Draft, review, and negotiate commodity financing, hedging, credit, security, intercreditor, guarantee, and related transaction agreements.
• Advise on transaction structure, enforceability, debtor insolvency, commodity title claims, security interest perfection, and secured creditor risks.
• Advise sales and trading personnel on CFTC, FERC, ISO/RTO, and other regulatory requirements in partnership with Compliance and Risk teams.
• Review commodity storage, transportation, licensing, and nondisclosure agreements and support new commodities trading initiatives.
• Coordinate legal advice with compliance, trading, sales, credit risk, senior management, and external counsel across North America and London.

Requirements

• JD from an accredited US law school.
• New York State Bar admission in good standing.
• 5–7 years of counsel experience in a top law firm, financial institution, commodity trading firm, or US regulatory or self-regulatory organization.
• Knowledge of the US regulatory landscape, US bankruptcy principles, physical commodity documentation, and major commodity classes.
• Working knowledge of ISDA, NAESB, EEI, physical annexes, credit documentation, emissions trading schemes, and hedging tools.
• Strong communication, drafting, negotiation, interpersonal, and stakeholder-management skills.
