Backend Engineer (Fintech)

Location: San Francisco, United States; in-office 5 days a week

Annual starting salary: $160,000–$295,000 + equity and benefits.

What you will do

• Design and build backend systems for applications, underwriting, accounts, ledgers, transactions, payments, rewards, risk, and partner APIs.
• Take projects from initial scoping and design through implementation, testing, rollout, and ongoing operations.
• Build new capabilities, scale and harden existing systems, and develop infrastructure for future financial products.
• Work across domains and services to address the highest-value engineering problems.
• Collaborate with product, risk, compliance, operations, partners, and vendors in a regulated environment.
• Improve reliability, observability, and developer experience across the platform.

Requirements

• Strong systems thinking, problem solving, communication, and attention to correctness.
• Experience building and operating production backend services and delivering projects end to end.
• Solid fundamentals in distributed systems, APIs, databases, and infrastructure.
• Proficiency in a modern backend language and ecosystem; the primary stack is Java, with Python used for data work.
• Ability to work in the San Francisco office 5 days per week.

Nice to have

• Experience in fintech, payments, lending, or card issuing, including authorization, ledgers, settlement, reconciliation, disputes, or regulatory work.
• Experience with workflow orchestration such as Temporal or Step Functions, or with event streaming.
• Experience building and maintaining external, partner-facing APIs.
