Engineering Student Industrial Placement 2027 (Medical Devices)

Location: Leeds, Yorkshire, United Kingdom; 12-month onsite industrial placement.

Johnson & Johnson MedTech develops healthcare and medical device solutions, including orthopedic implants and surgical instruments.

What you will do

• Support hip and knee new product development, design quality, research, or testing teams.
• Contribute to medical implant and surgical instrument design, concept generation, product specifications, material selection, and prototyping.
• Perform product testing, develop in vitro test methods and protocols, and support validation activities.
• Create 3D CAD models and engineering drawings while supporting equipment validation, design verification, and regulatory documentation.
• Conduct technical research, analyze retrieved products, and prepare reports for product development.
• Collaborate with Design, Bioengineering, Quality, Manufacturing, Research, Testing, surgeons, and external suppliers.

Requirements

• At least two years of degree-level study completed.
• Minimum 2:1, or equivalent, achieved in the first year of study.
• Study in Engineering, Data Science, Design, Biomedical, Clinical, Medical, Mechanical, Materials, Product Design, or a related field.
• Curiosity, motivation, analytical and problem-solving skills, attention to detail, communication skills, and willingness to learn.
• Ability to collaborate effectively in a team environment and interest in healthcare, user-centered design, and emerging technologies.

Nice to have

• Knowledge of Python, data analysis, and data science concepts.
• Experience with sensors and data acquisition systems.
• Experience with CAD, Figma, or similar design software.
