Mechanical Design Senior Staff Engineer (HDD)

Location: Onsite in Longmont, Colorado, or Shakopee, Minnesota, United States. Monday–Friday during core business hours; up to 10% travel.

Salary: $132,900–$193,800 annual base salary, depending on work location, skills, experience, education, and training.

What you will do

• Build, automate, and maintain dynamic and structural FEA models for vibration, modal behavior, actuation response, and system interactions.
• Design and execute experiments to validate dynamic behavior, including vibration, resonance, damping, and actuation performance.
• Lead model-to-test correlation using LDV, oscilloscopes, function generators, NI data acquisition systems, and high-frequency instrumentation.
• Design and develop head stack assemblies, suspensions, actuators, coils, and mechanical subsystems from concept through validation.
• Create mechanical architectures and actuation concepts that improve bandwidth, stiffness, damping, robustness, reliability, manufacturability, and cost.
• Own cross-functional technical programs, resolve tradeoffs, communicate validated engineering recommendations, and mentor engineers.

Requirements

• Advanced experience in mechanical dynamics, structural mechanics, vibration analysis, and precision actuation systems.
• Experience building and refining predictive models, assessing simulation validity, and developing mechanical designs from fundamental physical understanding.
• Proficiency in Python and/or MATLAB for data analysis, automation, and modeling.
• Bachelor’s degree in a related engineering or science field with 12+ years of experience, master’s degree with 8+ years, PhD with 5+ years, or equivalent education and experience.
• Experience bridging research, design, validation, and manufacturing requirements and leading complex cross-functional technical programs.
• Must work onsite at either the Longmont, Colorado, or Shakopee, Minnesota site.

Nice to have

• Expertise with ANSYS APDL, ANSYS Workbench, HyperWorks, MATLAB, or equivalent simulation tools, including automated and parametric workflows.
• Hands-on laboratory testing experience with dynamic systems and related instrumentation.
• Background in piezoelectric materials, micro-actuators, material characterization, MEMS, or adjacent microscale technologies.
• Experience applying AI/ML, advanced analytics, surrogate modeling, optimization, or automated design exploration to engineering problems.
• Experience with invention disclosures, patents, technology strategy, HDD, semiconductor, aerospace, robotics, precision instrumentation, or other high-performance mechatronic systems.
