TL;DR
Manager, Payroll Operations & Control (Payroll/Accounting): Leading payroll and benefits operations, controls, compliance, reporting, and system improvements for a large university with an accent on risk management, reconciliations, regulatory obligations, and service delivery. Focus on strengthening segregation of duties, implementing payroll processes and systems, resolving complex legislative and financial issues, and guiding a team of approximately 25 staff.

Location: hirify.global Vancouver Campus, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada

Salary: CAD 9,599.75–14,385.50 per month

What you will do

  • Lead the payroll and benefits team, including Team Leads, through coaching, training, performance management, workforce planning, and career development.
  • Oversee payroll operations, financial reconciliations, reporting, payment distribution controls, source deduction remittances, and payroll records.
  • Ensure compliance with federal and provincial payroll legislation, contractual obligations, collective agreements, privacy requirements, and internal policies.
  • Identify process improvement opportunities and lead payroll process, system implementation, upgrade, and Finance/HR system renewal initiatives.
  • Develop risk controls, operational metrics, audit materials, business process documentation, and corrective actions for payroll issues.
  • Provide expert guidance to faculty, staff, Finance, Tax, Risk, Human Resources, auditors, government bodies, banks, and payroll service vendors.

Requirements

  • Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline and at least eight years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience leading payroll operations and managing staff, including hiring, training, evaluation, discipline, and termination.
  • Knowledge of payroll, accounting principles, internal controls, audits, benefits, legislation, regulations, and collective agreements.
  • Ability to lead system implementations, interfaces, process reviews, reporting, reconciliations, and compliance controls.
  • Strong communication, organizational, problem-solving, analytical, customer service, and attention-to-detail skills.
  • Commitment to respecting diverse perspectives and developing knowledge and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusion.

Nice to have

  • Payroll Leadership Professional Designation from the National Payroll Institute or equivalent.
  • CPA accounting designation, including CA, CGA, or CMA.
  • Experience with PeopleSoft and payroll processing for domestic and international employees.
