Senior Manager, Payroll

What you will do

• Lead day-to-day payroll operations for a large and complex workforce, including unionized staff, faculty, students, and administrative personnel.
• Oversee accurate semi-monthly payroll processing, statutory filings, financial transactions, and year-end reconciliation.
• Lead payroll professionals through coaching, technical guidance, performance management, and professional development.
• Ensure compliance with Canadian legislation, collective agreements, institutional policies, audit requirements, and privacy obligations.
• Drive payroll transformation, continuous improvement, Workday configuration, integrations, automation, and RPA initiatives with Finance, Human Resources, and Information Technology.
• Manage escalated payroll issues, labour-relations support, internal controls, operational metrics, service-level agreements, and stakeholder communications.

Requirements

• Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline and at least 9 years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Payroll Compliance Professional and Payroll Leadership Professional designations from the National Payroll Institute, or equivalent.
• Extensive experience with data analysis in large ERP systems or large datasets, including reporting tools, performance indicators, and analytical tools.
• Experience managing payroll teams and processes in a complex ERP environment such as Workday, SAP, or similar.
• In-depth knowledge of Canadian payroll legislation, pension plans, benefits administration, payroll controls, and risk management.
• Strong leadership, communication, analytical, conflict-management, and cross-functional collaboration skills.

Nice to have

• Experience in a large, unionized public-sector organization, higher education, or government.
• Completion of a CPA accounting program, including CA, CGA, or CMA.
• Prior experience as a payroll subject matter expert in a large, complex organization.
