TL;DR
Materials Engineer (Gas Turbine Coatings): Developing, qualifying, implementing, and sustaining protective coating systems for industrial gas turbine components with an accent on hot-section and environmental barrier coatings. Focus on defining coating architectures and process windows, analyzing oxidation and corrosion failures, qualifying suppliers, and supporting manufacturing, field service, and product reliability.

Location: San Diego, California; onsite five days a week. Relocation is available. Visa sponsorship is not available.

Salary: $128,470–$192,710 per year

What you will do

  • Develop, optimize, qualify, implement, and sustain protective coating systems for gas turbine components, including airfoils, combustor hardware, shrouds, and structural parts.
  • Define coating architectures, process windows, and acceptance criteria based on service environment, component design, and life requirements.
  • Support new product introduction by selecting and qualifying coatings against performance, cost, and schedule targets.
  • Provide technical support for manufacturing process control, troubleshooting, continuous improvement, and repair technologies.
  • Lead supplier qualification and oversight through audits, capability assessments, and corrective actions.
  • Perform coating failure analysis and support product problem resolution, repair, overhaul, remanufacturing, and field-support programs.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Materials Science, Materials Engineering, Metallurgy, Ceramic Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • 15+ years of related industry experience.
  • Knowledge of high-temperature materials, surface engineering, turbomachinery applications, and engineering analysis techniques.
  • Experience working cross-functionally with manufacturing and product engineering.
  • Hands-on experience with thermal barrier coatings, APS, EB-PVD, MCrAlY and diffusion bond coats, and oxidation and corrosion protection systems.
  • Effective written and oral communication skills.

Nice to have

  • Master’s degree or PhD in Materials Science, Ceramic Engineering, or a related field.
  • Experience with coating characterization, supplier qualification, industrial gas turbine environments, and turbomachinery failure analysis.
  • Knowledge of coatings for additive manufacturing processes.
  • Prior operational experience and familiarity with Lean Six Sigma or Agile.
  • Leadership, change management, and concurrent project management experience.
