Senior Engineering Manager (Ontology Platform)

Location: Remote - New Jersey, US

Salary: USD 185,000–195,000 annually, plus potential discretionary bonus and/or equity awards.

What you will do

• Build, lead, and grow an initial team of 5–6 engineers, including hiring, performance management, and career development.
• Own the architecture of services, APIs, and data pipelines that ingest source-system data and map it to the enterprise ontology.
• Design storage, query, schema, graph-modeling, indexing, and performance strategies for large-scale heterogeneous data.
• Build configurable mapping, rules, validation, and exception-management capabilities for business and technical users.
• Deliver production-quality ingestion connectors, transformation logic, reconciliation pipelines, testing, CI/CD, observability, and support practices.
• Partner with the foundational data platform, product stakeholders, data governance, compliance, and senior business leaders.

Requirements

• 8–12 years of software or data engineering experience building production-grade platforms or services.
• Prior formal engineering management experience with direct responsibility for hiring, performance management, and career development.
• Strong backend engineering skills in at least one modern language such as Python, Java, Scala, or Go, plus API design and service architecture experience.
• Experience with data modeling and mapping frameworks, ontology or knowledge-graph concepts, graph databases or semantic web standards, and relational or non-relational data systems.
• Experience with configurable platforms, data pipelines, ETL/ELT, CI/CD, automated testing, infrastructure-as-code, and observability.
• Hands-on use of AI coding agents such as Claude Code or GitHub Copilot as a core development workflow.

Nice to have

• Experience scaling an enterprise ontology, knowledge graph, or MDM platform from early stages to production maturity.
• Experience growing an engineering team from an initial 5–6 members.
• Cloud-native architecture and data-platform experience, including containerized services and event-driven pipelines.
• Familiarity with data governance, metadata management, financial services, asset management, or another regulated data-intensive industry.
