2027 Spring Co-op CMC Synthetics Platform Process and Pharmaceutical Engineering Scientist

What you will do

• Predict single-crystal material properties relevant to pharmaceutical development, including mechanical behavior, elasticity, anisotropy, crystal structure, and morphology.
• Evaluate how particle and crystal properties influence downstream processing, tablet manufacturing, and product performance.
• Design and conduct experiments to characterize tablet mechanical performance, including diametral compression and dynamic breakage testing.
• Use digital image correlation and imaging tools to quantify strain localization, crack initiation, and failure mechanisms.
• Integrate experimental and modeling results into predictive frameworks supporting formulation and process design.
• Collaborate with scientists and engineers to advance mechanistic understanding of material–process–performance relationships.

Requirements

• Currently pursuing a Master's or PhD in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Pharmaceutical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or a related technical field.
• Must be permanently authorized to work in the United States and must not require current or future employment visa sponsorship.
• Must remain enrolled at an accredited college or university throughout the six-month co-op.
• Must be able to relocate to the Cambridge office and work onsite 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday, for the full co-op duration.
• Strong interest in material science, solid mechanics, and pharmaceutical process engineering, plus familiarity with scientific programming or data analysis using Python, MATLAB, R, or similar tools.
• Strong problem-solving, communication, collaboration, autonomy, and laboratory experimentation skills.

Nice to have

• Exposure to solid-state chemistry, crystal structure analysis, powder mechanics, or pharmaceutical unit operations.
• Experience with Mercury, Materials Studio, crystallographic or molecular simulation software.
• Experience with finite element methods, Abaqus, COMSOL, experimental mechanics, or digital image correlation.
• Experience analyzing scientific data and presenting technical results.
