R&D PhD Summer Intern (Multiscale Modeling of Materials)

Location: In-person at the Mason Business Center, 3–5 days per week

What you will do

• Evaluate computational approaches for polymer science, soft materials, and molecular modeling.
• Apply simulation and theoretical methods to representative polymer systems.
• Develop and run demonstration simulations using multiscale modeling approaches.
• Compare model predictions with experimental observations and technical design needs.
• Create Python scripts and workflows for simulation setup, execution, and analysis.
• Document findings and present recommendations to technical partners.

Requirements

• Working toward a PhD in Polymer Science, Materials Science and Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Computational Chemistry, Soft Matter Physics, or a related discipline.
• Experience with polymer physics, soft materials, molecular simulation, molecular dynamics, coarse-grained modeling, computational chemistry, or multiscale materials modeling.
• Python programming experience is required.
• Familiarity with molecular simulation packages such as LAMMPS or similar tools.
• Knowledge of the mechanical behavior of soft materials, including dynamic mechanical analysis and tensile testing.
• Available for a 12-week, in-person internship from May or early June through August 2027.

Nice to have

• Basic understanding of polymer synthesis methods and standard chemistry laboratory practices.
• Experience with film-forming materials.
