Development Underwriter - SME (Insurance)

Location: Manchester, UK; hybrid arrangement with three days per week in the office and two days at home

What you will do

• Manage the profitability, growth, and retention of a portfolio of low- to moderately complex SME property and casualty insurance accounts.
• Underwrite and negotiate risks, including mid-term adjustments, while maintaining alignment with risk appetite.
• Use technology platforms to quote and bind e-trade risks efficiently.
• Develop new-business and retention pipelines, identify cross-selling opportunities, and work with sales teams and brokers.
• Monitor portfolio performance, address risk characteristics, and support underwriting reviews and regulatory or product projects.
• Build broker and internal partnerships while training and supporting less experienced underwriters.

Requirements

• UK A-Levels or an equivalent qualification
• Good experience in underwriting, product knowledge, financial analysis, or risk assessment.
• Knowledge of insurance products, the regulatory environment, and the local insurance market.
• Strong critical-thinking, analytical, communication, and broker negotiation skills.
• Ability to analyse competitor and industry information and contribute to routine product or regulatory projects.
