What you will do
- Design and conduct advanced applied research into complex drilling challenges using experimental, analytical, statistical, and modelling techniques.
- Develop, test, validate, and deploy drilling technologies, tools, materials, methodologies, and digital solutions.
- Analyse drilling, operational, and subsurface data to identify root causes, trends, risks, and performance improvements.
- Lead research projects, field trials, pilots, technology roadmaps, proposals, and investment cases.
- Translate research outcomes into engineering solutions, operating procedures, technical standards, and decision-support tools.
- Collaborate with engineers, operations teams, data specialists, universities, research institutes, and technology providers while mentoring technical professionals.
Requirements
- Typically 12+ years of experience in drilling technology, applied research, engineering, or a related upstream discipline.
- Master’s degree or PhD in drilling, petroleum, mechanical, chemical engineering, applied physics, engineering data science, or a related technical discipline; equivalent expertise may be accepted.
- Extensive experience delivering applied research, developing drilling technologies, and progressing solutions from concept through field validation and operational deployment.
- Expertise in at least two drilling technology areas, such as drilling mechanics, hydraulics, wellbore stability, drill bits, directional drilling, drilling fluids, automation, sensing, or real-time optimisation.
- Experience with advanced analytics, simulation, statistical modelling, machine learning, AI, digital drilling, robotics, automation, or data-driven optimisation is highly relevant.
- Two to four years of technical leadership, mentoring, coaching, or strategic guidance experience, plus strong technical communication skills.
Nice to have
- Chartered Engineer, European Engineer, PRINCE2 Practitioner, PMP, or equivalent professional accreditation.
- Patents, invention disclosures, technology commercialisation, field-deployed technologies, or recognised research publications.
- Experience managing large research programmes, technology portfolios, or multidisciplinary technical initiatives.
