TL;DR
Senior AI Search Engineer (AI/search): Building the retrieval layer for product discovery across enterprise commerce catalogs with an accent on semantic and hybrid retrieval, scalability, and query-cost optimization. Focus on designing search functionality, improving relevance with vector-based approaches, and operating multi-tenant production systems with on-call responsibility.
Location: Hybrid, with three days per week in an office in London, Munich, Berlin, or Valencia

What you will do
- Design and implement search functionality in a PaaS e-commerce backend built with Scala.
- Build retrieval capabilities for semantic and hybrid search across demanding enterprise catalogs.
- Develop scalable, multi-tenant search architecture.
- Analyze user needs and evaluate technical approaches with Product Management and DevOps.
- Test software components for usability, functionality, and performance.
- Participate in on-call rotations for production systems with a globally distributed team.
Requirements
- 5+ years of experience as a Software Engineer working in search.
- Experience building search solutions with Elasticsearch, Solr, OpenSearch, or similar engines.
- Fluent English communication skills for working in international teams.
- Strong problem-solving skills and a willingness to learn new technologies and concepts.
- Curiosity about using AI tools to improve software engineering effectiveness.
- Ability to work in a hybrid arrangement with three office days per week in London, Munich, Berlin, or Valencia.
Nice to have
- Experience with vector search, hybrid search, learning to rank, or re-rankers.
- Experience developing REST APIs and scalable event-driven architectures, including queues, notification topics, sharding, replication, load balancing, and failover.
- Experience with Scala or other functional programming languages.
- Experience with infrastructure technologies such as Helm, Kubernetes, and Rust.
