Senior Linux & Infrastructure Automation Engineer

Location: Chicago, Illinois, USA

Salary: $91,800–$146,800 per year, with potential bonus, commission, or incentive compensation depending on the role.

What you will do

• Design, develop, and maintain Puppet modules and Ansible playbooks for automated provisioning, application deployment, configuration management, and continuous compliance.
• Administer, tune, troubleshoot, secure, and optimize enterprise Ubuntu and Debian Linux environments.
• Operate and optimize OpenStack, LXD, KVM, and ESXi virtualization and hypervisor environments.
• Automate bare-metal server provisioning and maintain infrastructure across physical, virtualized, colocation, and cloud environments.
• Administer persistent storage infrastructure, including SAN equipment and enterprise S3-compatible storage targets.
• Execute platform refreshes, legacy environment decommissioning, and infrastructure migrations across datacenter environments.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related engineering discipline, or equivalent professional experience.
• At least 5–7+ years of hands-on experience in Linux infrastructure engineering, systems administration, and cloud infrastructure automation.
• Expert-level experience engineering, hardening, and maintaining enterprise Ubuntu/Debian server environments.
• Proven ability to author custom Puppet modules and Ansible playbooks or roles for infrastructure automation at scale.
• Experience with bare-metal provisioning, KVM, LXD, ESXi, enterprise storage architectures, SAN/NAS, block and object storage, and volume management.
• Working knowledge of Active Directory integration, enterprise PKI, certificate enrollment, and domain identity services.

Nice to have

• Production experience configuring, troubleshooting, and maintaining OpenStack deployments, including Nova, Neutron, Cinder, and Keystone.
• Experience operating Ceph storage clusters.
• Experience with Canonical MAAS or similar automated bare-metal provisioning platforms.
• Familiarity with MicroCloud and lightweight edge cloud infrastructure.
