TL;DR
Systems Engineer (Autonomous Underwater Vehicles) (Robotics/Defense): Developing system-level requirements, architectures, and verification plans for autonomous underwater vehicle platforms with an accent on multidisciplinary hardware/software integration and testability. Focus on decomposing mission needs into verifiable subsystem requirements, defining validation criteria, managing technical risks, and supporting systems from prototype through production.

Location: Bristol, Rhode Island, United States; work is based at a waterfront workshop and office.

What you will do

  • Derive and document system-level requirements from mission, programmatic, and customer needs, decomposing them into testable subsystem requirements.
  • Develop and maintain system architectures and block diagrams covering mechanical, electrical, and software components and interfaces.
  • Define pass/fail criteria and partner with test engineering on verification methods and execution.
  • Own verification and validation planning for programmatic and internal research and development systems.
  • Lead and participate in multidisciplinary design reviews and support hardware and software integration.
  • Maintain lifecycle documentation, identify system-level risks, troubleshoot fielded and test systems, and drive mitigation strategies.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Systems, Aerospace, Ocean Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
  • 5–8 years of systems engineering experience with complex multidisciplinary hardware/software products.
  • Experience owning requirements derivation, system design, requirements decomposition, and verification and validation planning.
  • Strong understanding of interactions between mechanical, electrical, and software subsystems.
  • Familiarity with code and software sufficient to collaborate with firmware and software engineering teams.
  • Familiarity with the Department of War Systems Engineering Technical Review process and Agile systems engineering methodologies such as Scrum.

Nice to have

  • Familiarity with Model-Based Systems Engineering.
