TL;DR
System Safety Engineer (Aerospace): Developing safety analyses and risk controls for human-rated commercial space stations with an accent on failure tolerance, crew survivability, and mission assurance. Focus on performing functional hazard analyses, assessing compliance with NASA, FAA, Range Safety, MIL-STD-882, and ARP-4761 standards, and communicating safety outcomes across engineering teams.

Location: Long Beach, California, United States; onsite at the Long Beach location. Travel up to 20% may be required, including evenings or weekends for critical mission milestones.

Salary: $110,700–$192,060 USD per year in California.

What you will do

  • Partner with engineering teams to understand system design and operations.
  • Document safety and mission hazards and develop controls to mitigate risk.
  • Assess vehicle compliance with failure-tolerance requirements.
  • Identify design improvements that reduce risk to people and property.
  • Participate in internal and external design reviews and communicate safety analysis outcomes.
  • Perform functional hazard analyses, crew survivability analyses, safety data packages, human error assessments, and range safety compliance work.

Requirements

  • B.S. degree in aerospace engineering or a related field.
  • Experience in aerospace, aviation, or another safety-critical industry.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, fluid schematics, and electrical circuit diagrams.
  • Strong safety and mission assurance fundamentals.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Must be a U.S. person or otherwise eligible for deemed export licensing under U.S. export control requirements.

Nice to have

  • Experience with system safety analysis and certification of human-rated space systems.
  • Experience assessing compliance with Range Safety 91-710, NASA, FAA, MIL-STD-882, or ARP-4761.
  • Experience with safety activities including functional hazard analyses, crew survivability analysis, safety data packages, and human error assessments.
  • Ability to build relationships with experts across engineering disciplines and provide constructive safety feedback.
