Staff Software Engineer (Infrastructure)

What you will do

• Build and evolve Nova’s query execution engine and distributed compute layer, including query planning, columnar storage, encoding, caching, and cluster resource management.
• Extend the OLAP engine to support additional warehouse-imported data types and sustained, concurrent query workloads from AI agents.
• Improve performance and reduce compute, storage, network, and memory costs through JVM profiling, garbage-collection tuning, concurrency optimization, and data-layout decisions.
• Build query guardrails, observability, capacity-planning practices, rollout tooling, and reliability improvements.
• Lead multi-month architecture and infrastructure projects, contribute to design reviews and code reviews, and mentor engineers.
• Collaborate with Product, Middleware, Data Pipeline, and engineering teams to connect Nova’s capabilities to customer value.

Requirements

• 7+ years of backend or infrastructure engineering experience with depth in distributed data systems.
• Hands-on experience building or extending OLAP engines, query processors, columnar databases, or large-scale data processing systems.
• Experience driving significant cloud infrastructure cost optimization across compute, storage, and network resources.
• Strong knowledge of distributed systems, partitioning, replication, consistency, failover, algorithms, concurrency, multithreading, and performance optimization.
• Production experience with AWS, Kafka, Redis or ElastiCache, Kubernetes, Terraform, or strong equivalents.
• Proficiency in Java, C++, or Python, plus experience leading technical discussions and mentoring engineers.

Nice to have

• Experience with Druid, ClickHouse, Presto/Trino, BigQuery, Snowflake, or similar query engines.
• Deep JVM expertise, including garbage-collection tuning, profiling, and memory optimization.
• Experience with Arrow, Parquet, ORC, or custom columnar formats.
• Background in product analytics, experimentation platforms, event-driven data systems, open-source infrastructure, or published data-systems research.
