Principal Data Scientist (Computer Vision)

Location: Bellevue Skyline Office, Bellevue, Washington, United States

Salary: $132,000–$264,000 annual base salary, plus potential performance bonuses and stock compensation.

Walmart's Global Governance Technology team develops AI and advanced technology solutions for security, compliance, investigations, privacy, legal, product safety, and global trade.

What you will do

• Design and deliver production-scale computer vision solutions for detection, classification, tracking, segmentation, video understanding, anomaly detection, and multimodal AI.
• Build end-to-end pipelines covering data collection, labeling, training, evaluation, deployment, monitoring, and model improvement.
• Partner with Engineering to optimize inference performance, latency, cost, and edge or cloud deployment.
• Establish reusable computer vision frameworks and evaluation standards that support accuracy, reliability, privacy, explainability, and scalability.
• Translate business problems into measurable technical solutions and collaborate with Engineering, Product, and Business teams.
• Mentor other data scientists and contribute to technical direction across Global Governance.

Requirements

• Deep expertise in computer vision, deep learning, and applied machine learning, with hands-on experience building and deploying production vision systems.
• Knowledge of modern vision architectures, video analytics, object detection, tracking, segmentation, multimodal models, and representation learning.
• Experience with Python, large-scale data pipelines, model serving, and MLOps; familiarity with PyTorch or TensorFlow.
• Strong analytical judgment, experience working with noisy real-world data, and the ability to influence cross-functional teams.
• Bachelor's degree in a relevant field and 5 years of analytics experience; or a master's degree and 3 years of experience; or 7 years of experience in analytics or a related field.

Nice to have

• Data science, machine learning, optimization models, or a PhD in a related field.
• Publications or active peer-review experience in relevant journals or conferences.
• Assessment experience with Python, Spark, Scala, or R, and use of open-source frameworks such as scikit-learn, TensorFlow, or Torch.
• Knowledge of WCAG 2.2 AA, assistive technologies, and digital accessibility practices.
