Team Lead (Haskell/Rust)

Location: Hybrid in Utrecht, Netherlands; at least two days per week in the Utrecht office and the rest from home. EU citizenship or a valid work permit for the Netherlands is required.

Gross annual salary: €77,000–€103,000, including 8% holiday allowance, based on a 40-hour work week.

What you will do

• Lead a team of four experienced Haskell and Rust engineers, organize work, manage priorities, and support team growth.
• Architect, develop, test, and maintain foundational services for product engineering teams.
• Improve service reliability, robustness, scalability, and performance.
• Collaborate with other team leads on the long-term roadmap and work with product engineering and DevOps teams on requirements and issues.
• Review code, break large projects into actionable issues, debug problems, and help engineers resolve technical roadblocks.
• Hire team members, establish team culture, improve processes, and conduct performance reviews.

Requirements

• Previous experience leading an engineering team, or substantial engineering experience with motivation to begin a leadership career.
• Strong backend development experience, functional programming knowledge, and professional experience with Haskell, Scala, or Rust.
• Ability to provide detailed high-level and low-level code reviews and mentor engineers technically.
• Familiarity with relational databases, ideally PostgreSQL, as well as Linux, Git, web technologies, and APIs.
• Strong communication, problem-solving, prioritization, and collaboration skills.
• EU citizenship or a valid work permit for the Netherlands; availability for at least 32 hours per week and two office days in Utrecht.

• Python experience.
• Experience already living in the Netherlands.
• Willingness to learn Haskell when coming from a Rust or Scala background.
