Staff Mechanical Engineer (VPX/OpenVPX)

Location: Full-time, on-site in El Segundo, California, United States

Salary: $167,000–$209,000 annual base compensation, excluding bonuses, equity, and benefits.

What you will do

• Lead mechanical design and packaging for 3U and 6U VPX cards, chassis, card cages, backplanes, and electronic assemblies.
• Develop mechanical architectures, interfaces, mounting schemes, card-cage layouts, thermal interfaces, and cooling solutions.
• Design VPX features including card guides, wedgelocks, module retainers, front panels, ejectors, alignment features, backshells, and chassis interfaces.
• Create and maintain 3D CAD models, complex assemblies, production drawings, installation documentation, and interface control documents.
• Support structural and thermal analysis, prototyping, fit checks, qualification testing, production transition, configuration control, and fielded-hardware sustainment.
• Collaborate with electrical, RF, thermal, manufacturing, systems engineering teams, suppliers, and customers to resolve integration challenges.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.
• 7+ years of progressively responsible mechanical design and integration experience in aerospace, defense, or similar applications.
• Demonstrated experience with 3U and 6U VPX or OpenVPX mechanical packaging.
• Strong proficiency with mechanical CAD tools such as SolidWorks, including complex assemblies and detailed design.
• Experience with production-ready drawings, GD&T, tolerance analysis, configuration-controlled documentation, VPX connectors, backplanes, card guides, and retention methods.
• Working knowledge of VITA and OpenVPX standards, structural and thermal analysis, ruggedized hardware, and the ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. security clearance.

Nice to have

• Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
• Experience with conduction-cooled, air-flow-through, or liquid-cooled VPX packaging and electronics cooling solutions.
• Experience with EMI/EMC shielding, environmental sealing, connector backshells, cable harness routing, and electromechanical integration.
• Experience with FEA or thermal simulation tools such as ANSYS, NASTRAN, ABAQUS, or COMSOL.
• Experience with environmental qualification testing and VME/VMEbus electronics or migration to VPX/OpenVPX architectures.
